Sad but true. People in hard places make it difficult to live them. In books and movies trust comes quickly. As a writer you have to make people like a hurt character at once, but sometimes I don’t like doing that. True, less people might get my diamond in the rough heroes but their behaviors are true to my experience. My characters don’t let me cover for them.
Fictional characters have a way of taking your stories in unexpected directions. I say bring it on! I love being surprised when writing a novel. 📖

Okay. Yes. The past was filled with it’s own struggles. But in every age there are a few artists who give a glimpse into the eternal through their beautiful renderings of life here on this messed up earth.
Bookish people: what’s your favorite spring quote?
I was obsessed with my Irish heritage for a while. It makes sense because the Irish are born storytellers. My father was one of the best of them, turning the suffering he saw around him into dark, funny tales. My mother has some Irish blood too. Her stories are quieter and filled with pathos. I think I lean hard on my mother’s gifts. 🤷‍♀️
Family sagas, found family, underdogs, addiction, war, forgiveness … there’s so much to write about the human condition and so much to love about even flawed people. How could I ever be poor?
